À Velocidade do Sol: 2023 Energy and Environment Week commemmorative project

Porto Energy Agency - AdEPorto, in partnership with E-Redes and together with the associated municipalities, Gondomar, Maia, Matosinhos, Paredes, Porto, Póvoa de Varzim, Santo Tirso, Trofa, Valongo and Vila do Conde, coordinated a new edition of the project “À Velocidade do Sol” in 2023. This project was organized in the context of 2023 Energy and Environment Week, marking the National Energy Day, celebrated on May 29th, and National Environment Day, celebrated on June 5th.
This initiative has the objective of raising awareness among young people, in a didactical manner, for the renewable energies’ versatility associated to the conversion technologies, and demonstrate how they can take advantage from them, in a simple and fun way.
Similarly to the previous editions, the project was composed by two stages, the first one destinated to the design and construction of solar cars using kits, which include solar panels and motors, provided by AdEPorto. In a second phase, the cars were tested in races, promoted by the organization, divided in two ranks, the first rank comprehended the primary level of school and the second rank the secondary level of school.
The evaluation of the car performance was primarily composed by the design phase where aspects related to the construction, namely, technical features, materials used by applying the circular economy concept, among other criteria, are valued. Municipal Races, which composed the practical assessment, were organized between May 22nd and June 5th and attended by more than 40 schools, 440 students and 70 teachers. For each Municipal Race, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place were identified as winners of the initiative and received awards, additionally the fastest car received also a trophy. The fastest cars, in each race, for each rank, were selected to participate in the Intermunicipal Final.
On June 14th, the Intermunicipal Final took place in Parque Urbano de Geão in Santo Tirso municipality. The fastest car went through the track of about 5 meters, in less than 3 seconds. Also, in the Intermunicipal Final, an award, along with a trophy was given to the winner.
